Lynden is the second largest city in WhatcomCounty, Washington State. According to the United States Census Bureau, this city has a population of approximately 12,902. The residents of this city are referred to as ‘Lyndenites’.

History

Lynden was established in 1874 by Holden and Phoebe Judson. Phoebe Judson named the city after the riverside town in Hohenlinden. This was a poem by Thomas Campbell-

‘On Linden, when the sun was low,
All bloodless lay the untrodden snow;
And dark as winter was the flow
Of Iser rolling rapidly’.

Judson changed the spelling of the city so as to make it more appealing.

Area

The United States Census Bureau states that the city has a total area of 5.18 square miles (13.42 km2). Out of this, 5.17 square miles is covered by land while 0.01 square miles is covered by water. This city is one of the few in the world that has its main entrance between two cemeteries.
